Order & Chaos: Online “Relic’s Key” update next week

Sunday, August 21st, 2011 by

According to my phone, the next update for Gameloft’s Order & Chaos: Online will be coming next week. Imaginatively titled “Update 2,” the update will contain a new dungeon titled “Relic’s Key.” Since it’s Sunday where I am, I’m not sure if that means this week or next week. The original release date was said to be late August.

Order & Chaos: Online was known to have broken some interesting, yet infamous, ground in having both a monthly subscription rate AND a second currency that buy you things you can’t get anywhere else. While most of the Rune privileges you could live without, such as luxury pets that do nothing or the ability to re-spawn where you died, they included crafting “Essences” that made some of the best armor in the game even better. However, other players often sell these “Reinforced” items for a solid profit, so even these weren’t necessary Rune purchases if you had gold to spare.

Protip: I don't really like Penny-Arcade, anymore. They're too well established.

The previous update, cleverly titled “Update 1,” changed that. The best level 60 armor for every class was sold in Greenmont as Runes-only items. While some “Reinforced” items were better overall, there was no denying that it was too easy to get the great gear if you had fifteen bucks to spare.

Update 2 looks to rectify that by making all that shit I you begrudgingly purchased obsolete. The Relic’s Key dungeon details have dripped out and anyone who’s been saving up gold for all those items are going to be shit out of luck, as they bind to your character on pickup. Here’s hoping it’s always in your class. I could really use an “Epic” crossbow and a cloak that surpasses my level 53 “Invader’s Cloak”. That level 58 “Blood Monk’s Cloak of the Desert” sure as hell didn’t do it for me.

Interestingly enough, the level 60 “Legendary” mode has a cooldown timer that will limit the amount of times you can defend your area in a day. It resets after a 24-hour timer expires. You know, unless you use Runes to reset the timer. Way to supplement that subscription income, Gameloft.

Now what am I going to do with all this worthless gold? Well, I guess buying the new crafting recipes will have to do. Time to stock up on General’s Symbols… and Runes.

More poorly-detailed details can be found on this thread over on Gameloft’s forums.

As of right now, we’re going to assume this applies only to the iOS version with Android and Facebook to follow, but you never know. Because they don’t freaking tell us anything.

Is the game actually fun enough to warrant wading through all the expense and bullshit?

It’s pretty generic but decent overall. You don’t have to wade through a lot of bullshit, really. It’s very possible to have a good time without buying anything other than the app itself (which I picked up for ninety-nine cents the only time it went on sale) as it comes with a three month subscription. This update will make it even more plausible from the looks of it.

The downside is that it took me just five weeks to hit level 60, and I wasn’t really trying that hard. People who buy runes and don’t mind just grinding critters could do it much faster with the purchasable “Saintly Blessing” buff that gives you an experience boost.

You can play the game for free to level 10 on Facebook. No installation necessary and decent load times. My laptop and its integrated video card don’t handle the graphics so well, but it can play it. After that, it’s a meager dollar a month to keep playing or two bucks for three months.

It’s cheap, it’s fun enough, and it has a much better community on Facebook. It’s just a shame that they only let new players play until level 10. You can’t even get a helmet for most classes until level 15.

Groovy. If I’m ever bored, I’ll check it out on Facebook.
