New Super Mario Bros. 2 Coming To 3DS

Saturday, April 21st, 2012 by

The new Mario game previously teased for the 3DS has been now revealed to be New Super Mario Bros. 2, the sequel to the original hit for the DS and Wii. It’s due in August (well, for Japan), and little has been shown from the game save for a handful of screens.

Most notable among these is the one above, which shows an airborne Mario with a raccoon tail protruding from his bum. Also worth noting is the “P” gauge at the bottom of the screen, which suggests that the mechanics of raccoon tail flight introduced in Super Mario Bros. 3 will be making a triumphant return.

I’m actually NOT looking forward to this. I’m sure it will be good, mind you, but what I really loved about New Super Mario Bros was that there was no floating mechanics to save you if you botched a jump.

It’ll be great because Mario games almost always are, but I’m less excited about it than most people.

I’m actually pretty much done with Mario games altogether, baring some brave new direction in the series. I played through all of NSMB on the DS, but it felt like SUCH A CHORE.

Super Mario Bros. essentially created the platforming genre, but the series is now, at least for this gamer, way overdone.

I feel ya, bra. At least, I used to. I parted ways with Mario after Mario 64 but have been recently reunited with him in a big way, thanks to my son’s infatuation with the Mario universe.

        Blasphemy!

Could result in some trickier level design, though, something akin to Super Mario World. Come to think of it, I think a Super Mario World 2 would have been a nicer direction to go.

Er, they did that, didn’t they? I meant something more like a sequel than a crying baby Mario prequel.
