Rovio’s Amazing Alex looks very Rube Goldberg-y

Friday, June 29th, 2012 by

After hinting for a while that their next game would not start with the words “Angry Birds,” Rovio has let the cat out of the bag. Amazing Alex is the next Rovio project and, no surprise, it’s a physics-based puzzler.

If the image above and trailer below are any indication, it’ll owe a great debt to all those Rube Goldberg machines in cartoons you watched growing up. My personal favorite is the one at the end of the Bugs Bunny cartoon “Bully for Bugs.”

Amazing Alex will launch with 100 levels. Unlike Angry Birds, it will also allow user-created content in addition to Rovio’s regular updates.

Hey,  guys, try not to make a penis-inspired level just this once. Who am I kidding, that’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear “user-created content.”

Amazing Alex will be released next month for iOS and Android mobile phones.

“User-created content” is latin for dong, if I’m not mistaken.

I’ve also heard it referred to “User Content,” but only after the briss.

‘Bout it. I haven’t played a Rubey game since The Incredible Machine, over which I went absolutely batshit nutso, including making tons of my own levels. IkeCube did the same.

I’ve never heard of The Incredible Machine until just now.

After a quick Wikipedia read, I think I understand the appeal. It turns out Disney has a version of it on iOS.

Well, these guys acquired an existing game, Casey’s Contraptions, and are rebranding/relaunching it as Amazing Alex. Casey’s etc. isn’t on the App Store any more, but you can see more details about it at http://mysterycoconut.com/casey/

Holy crap. I totally forgot about that. Good catch, sir.
