Farewell, Nintendo Power

Friday, August 24th, 2012 by

After December, Nintendo will pull the plug on Nintendo Power, the massively influential gaming magazine that, at one time, provided a generation of gamers with previews, strategies, and information you just couldn’t get anywhere else.

Enjoy Mega Ran’s heartfelt rap homage to the once legendary publication, and cry it out if need be. It’s okay, man.

Let’s not forget that Nintendo Power introduced an entire generation of console gamers to the RPG genre with a free copy of Dragon Warrior. It was actually my first RPG and, though it didn’t capture my imagination as well as many that would come after it, it did soften that learning curve so I could enjoy Final Fantasy.

I didn’t get a subscription of my own until I owned the SNES, but I really enjoyed flipping through my friends copies before then. Mega Man maps, fuck yeah.

I still have a bunch of issues at home. Nintendo stopped producing it a couple years back, if I’m not mistaken, but I had hope when it got handed off to another company that things would turn around. I wasn’t going to be onboard, though.

Magazines are dead, though. Game Informer’s about the last man standing, and that’s only because it’s GameStop’s primary marketing tool. Hype up new games, let gamers pick them up and trade-in old games. It’s super effective.

I wish I still had my issues – they got lost in the shuffle of moving around so damn much – there was just so much cool stuff to look forward to, I’d geek out whenever there was a new one in the mailbox. Well, “cool” being relative, I guess.
