Top 20 Mega Man Music

mega man headphones music ost

The mainline Mega Man series is not only long-running and endowed with a huge fanbase, it boasts some of the catchiest music in video game history. 10 games and one fan-project for an imaginary Mega Man 11 have led to the existence of over 300 tracks in the Mega Man OST catalog. I’ve culled this list down to the 20 best offerings and painstakingly ordered them into what I feel is a solid countdown to #1.

If you’re a fan of the series, then join us as we stroll through an 8-bit wonderland of auditory Mega Man nostalgia.

#20: MM6: Blizzard Man

#19: MM3: Dr. Wily Stage 3

#18: MM1: Fire Man

#17: MM1: Dr. Wily Stage 1

#16: MM10: Dr. Wily Stage Boss

#15: MM1: Elec Man

#14: MM10: Endless Stage

#13: MM3: Spark Man

#12: MM10: Solar Man

#11: MM3: Magnet Man

#10: MM2: Air Man

#9: MM11SP: Dr. Wily Stage 2

#8: MM9: Endless Stage

#7: MM3: Snake Man

#6: MM2: Wood Man

#5: MM9: Galaxy Man

#4: MM2: Quick Man

#3: MM9: Concrete Man

#2: MM2: Bubble Man

#1: MM2: Dr. Wily Stage 1

Bonus: DuckTales: The Moon

Sure, technically it’s not Mega Man music, but considering that Capcom’s main Mega Man people were responsible for DuckTales on the NES, it’s no wonder the gameplay and music are similar. This track is the best that the title has to offer.

Mega Man 2 is still the best all-around Mega Man game for me. I hadn’t thought about the music being a big part of it, regardless of my love for the Bubble Man and Wood Man themes.

But listening to the Dr. Wily Stage 1 music brought all sorts of memories up.

It also made me want to go back and play some of the old Capcom Disney games. They really made some ridiculously fun platforming back in the day.

I agree; 2 is my favorite. Having gone back and played 3, 9, and 10 recently, I can say that 10 is my second-favorite. 9 is so difficult that even on normal difficulty I have to spend time gathering screws to buy E-tanks before heading to Wily’s castle. 10′s default difficulty seems like the just-right porridge, plus 10 lets you cycle through your weapons without bringing up the menu like in the Mega Man X series, the absence of which always baffled me about 9.

Yeah, that Dr. Wily Stage 1 music from 2 is ridiculously good and evocative. When I started this, I had a feeling that Bubble Man’s music would be #1, then found that DWS1 was simply the better track.

They sure did make some great Capcom Disney games on the NES. DuckTales, Darkwing Duck, Chip ‘n Dale, Talespin… hell, I even heard that The Little Mermaid was solid.

I can verify the Little Mermaid.

What? I had a thing for Ariel.

Me too. Redheads and wot, roight roight?

Correction: In 9, I had to spend time collecting screws the first time through, but I just beat it again yesterday and had enough. I forgot that they give you a decent number of E-tanks in Wily’s castle. Plus there’s no secret 5th level, so you can use your 1/2-damage item in the fight against all eight robot masters and all of Wily’s forms.

It’s hard to shake them down to just twenty, but these are great songs. Personally, my top twenty would probably consist almost entirely of shit from 2 and 3, but that’s probably just the nostalgia talking.

Shadow Man, Gemini Man, and Cossack’s songs are probably my favorites that are missing from this list, but then there’s so much music I’ve forgotten that if I sat down and gave them all a dedicated listen, I’d probably come out with some new favorites in the end.

I hear you; it’s hard to shake the nostalgia factor and be purely objective. I’m sure my childhood experiences with 2 and 3 lent a lot of weight to those titles. Still, I think I did a decent job of looking at the series and giving everything a fair listen.

      Glad you enjoyed it.
