1977-2013: The Cost of Consoles Adjusted For Inflation

console prices adjusted for inflation

The Neo Geo was always regarded as a rich man’s SNK machine, so the high cost is no surprise. What is surprising, however, is that the price of the original NES, once adjusted for inflation, is more costly than the PS4. No wonder the old man wouldn’t get me one back in the day. “But your hand-me-down Commodore 64 works just fine!” he’d say.

Yeah dad, but does Duck Tales look like this on the Nintendo? Hmmm!? HMMMMMM!?

What’s still surprising to me 20 years later is that the 3DO was even created — didn’t people learn their lesson with the mediocre sales of the stupidly overpriced Neo Geo?

So the GameCube is the cheapest one. It was a pretty solid system, but outside of Pikmin, Donkey Konga, Metroid Prime (if you like the series when presented over-the-shoulder), Smash Bros., a handful of others, and being the birthing place of Resident Evil 4, its library was on the weak side, just like the N64. A shame on both counts.

Well, to be fair, the Neo Geo was worth the price to some people (a very powerful machine for its time with loads of great, exclusive games), whereas the 3DO was, sadly, never worth even half its weight in turds. Very sad, that one.

I always thought the 3DO was a Panasonic machine, but it turns out it was also manufactured by two other companies, making it maybe the only game console available from different manufacturers during its relevant tenure.
