Review: The Croods (iOS)

April 6th, 2013 by

the_croods_title

Rovio’s latest game, The Croods, is a vast departure from anything they’ve done in the past.

Off the top of my head, here’s a list of things that differ:

  • It’s based upon a franchise that Rovio does not own.
  • It’s free-to-play.
  • It’s a social game.
  • It has no physics engine as far as I can tell.

Rovio is out of their element in this foray. With tons of other town-builders available in the App Store, can Rovio make the Croods stand out from the rest?

Episode 008 – Sequels We Don’t Want to See: Death to IP!

October 21st, 2012 by

Today’s podcast is brought to you by the letters D and A and the number 8.

Sucky game!
Everything’s… kind of lame.
Why’d I pay to play this stu-pid thing?
Can you tell me why did I…
Why did I buy a sequelized game?

We’ve all bought sequels to the games we loved in the past. It’s understandable. But over time and multiple iterations, the things we loved about original game get lost in the name of progress. Sometimes a creative change is to blame. Other times, well, it’s the times that are a-changin’.

The key to a successful franchise? Make a game that people love, then make a sequel that does slightly more of what they love. Then, ditch all the people who made those games great and give the next team a list of things to throw into the next installment with no idea of how to implement them. Maybe draw a picture or something. Money follows!

Join Mark A. Brooks, Markham Asylum, and Fade to Slack as Delta Attack chats about games and what we’re just sick of seeing. Great franchises don’t die, they just get worse and worse because the built-in-audience will pay for them regardless. How does Ed Boon still have a job…?

Rovio announces Bad Piggies, wonder what it’s like…

September 4th, 2012 by

I’m not even going to try here. Why should I? Rovio didn’t.

Rovio’s next game changes the perspective and, I assume, tasks you with collecting eggs and pissing off a bunch of birds. They had to, really, on account of all those unanswered questions we all had. Let’s all sarcastically thank Amazing Alex for being a bit of a flash-in-the-pan flop.

Whatever Bad Piggies is, it’s coming to iOS, Android, and Mac on September 27th. So, yeah, there’s that.

Angry Birds: Seasons is your free App of the Week

July 5th, 2012 by

If you’ve yet to pick up an Angry Birds game for whatever reason, now is the perfect time.

Rovio’s second game, Angry Birds Seasons is free this week. It’s pick-up-and-play friendly, if a little clumsy. It’s hard to beat totally free, though.

Because, You Know, Why Not

Angry Birds HDMI cables! Somewhere out there, someone is very excited to know these exist.

What’s New In Angry Birds Space

March 22nd, 2012 by

You may have heard that there’s a new Angry Birds game out today. There totally is, and it’s a little more ambitious than any before it. Rovio’s iconic franchise takes to the stars in Angry Birds Space, the most dramatically different sequel in the series ever. So what exactly is new in this latest installment?

Angry Birds: Seasons sees another update

March 7th, 2012 by

With about two weeks left until the next Angry Birds game is released, Rovio could have just rested on their laurels. Which, if Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest has taught me anything, means they could have not become invincible and walked through poison marshes. But they didn’t.

No, with Spring comes a new Angry Birds: Seasons addition. Update your app now to play the Spring 2012 update. Set in Japan with a backdrop of Mt. Fuji, you have the Cherry Blossom levels.
