What happens when you mix a hack-and-slash clickfest with your standard, energy-restricted, free-to-play Facebook social game? Cloudstone, the first game from California-based indie developer, Playsaurus, aims to find out. For a Facebook game, Cloudstone has a surprising amount going for it.
The first thing that stuck out to me was the outstanding soundtrack. Most of the music found in the Facebook games I’ve played range between subpar and grating. I imagine, for instance, the soundtrack to Hell is the same theme you hear playing in Farmville.

After Angry Birds made the transition, I suppose it was only a matter of time before other developers ported their iOS and Android hits to Facebook. Enter my pick for the 2011 iOS Game of the Year, Jetpack Joyride.
If you have a Facebook account and some spare time, it doesn’t get a whole lot easier to understand than the one-button (in this case, space bar) gameplay of Jetpack Joyride.

PopCap has popped the cap (sorry) on their closed Solitaire Blitz Beta, making it open to the Facebook public at large. It’s a fast-paced, card-shuffling romp that blends the clock-racing elements of other Blitz games with the one-up, one-down gameplay of TriPeak solitaire, creating a super-addictive, evil little thing.

Mafia Wars added a new boss to the “Family Boss” fights. If you look at the picture, it’s easy to write her off an uninspired rip-off of Poison Ivy. Batman’s enemy, not the crazed jailbait babysitter.

Then you see the name. Lily O’Valley. For the uninformed, it seems especially lame. It doesn’t come off the tongue as nicely and they could have picked any poisonous plant, so why pick the lily of the valley?
Breaking Bad.
Warning: Breaking Bad season 4 spoilers after the jump.

There’s this great quote from Zynga CEO, Mark Pincus, to an ex-employee on SFWeekly, “I don’t [f-bomb]ing want innovation… You’re not smarter than your competitor. Just copy what they do and do it until you get their numbers.” While it’s impossible to verify, seeing Zynga’s business strategy thus far, it hardly seems like much of a stretch.
Hidden Chronicles is the latest in Zynga’s long line of unethical game theft, where they make a shameless, heartless copycat of a popular, existing game. The game in question is Playdom’s hidden-object game, Gardens of Time.

A couple months back, Zynga released Mafia Wars 2. I’m, admittedly, a huge Mafia Wars fan. I remember playing it on day one and thinking, “What’s so fun about this? It’s Zork with less action.” Yet, for whatever reason, something clicked with me. I’ve played it everyday since June 27, 2010 according to the first achievement I received, the since-retired “Working Man.”
Mafia Wars 2 is an improvement over Mafia Wars in many ways. So, how is it that it’s far less fun?

Good news, everyone (or the 5 million or so players still playing weekly)! If you have an iOS device, you can play Mafia Wars through your Facebook app, now. I wouldn’t suggest this to anyone playing on less than an iPhone 4G, iPod touch 4, or iPad, though, as it’s rather slow and buggy in its current state. As a matter of fact, it’s sluggish and rather worthless. That said, this does mean you can accept feed links and gifts on the go.
