A look at GAMER’Z, Korea’s #1 Gaming Magazine

March 16th, 2013 by

GAMER'Z Magazine March 2013 Cover Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

Every now and again, I like to bring you a little slice of Korean gaming. I try not to delve too deeply most of the time, but this was just too good to pass up.

Today, I present to you the best gaming magazine in all of Korea. There’s a good chance, and this is not hyperbole, this is the best monthly game magazine in the world.

Stickers show the power of “for Kakao” games in Korea

February 21st, 2013 by

korean_mobile_stickersA few months back, I stumbled across some Dragon Flight stickers in a Korean stationery store. While the game by Next Floor is relatively unknown in most parts of the world, it’s huge in Korea and a testament to the power of the Games for Kakao craze in Korea.

So, imagine my surprise when I saw these at a book store. While Angry Birds is expected and Spider-man’s there just for show, I never expected to see an “I Love Coffee” sticker mini-book. Again, here’s an unknown game that is simply huge in Korea courtesy of KakaoTalk.

Korea’s mobile game scene is vastly different from those in other countries through simple messenger integration.

Pokémon X and Pokémon Y announced for 3DS October 2013

January 8th, 2013 by

pokemonxyAn all-new generation of Pokémon is coming to Nintendo 3DS in Pokémon X and Pokémon Y for Nintendo 3DS. Generation VI will be in your hands this October and, frankly, I’m a little bit excited. I’m that outsider Pokémon fan who doesn’t really play the games or watch the cartoons, but does have this weird infatuation with Pocket Monsters. I’m not that guy, but I get that guy.

Fans look to be in for a real treat, at least on the surface, as the game got a huge graphical bump. If they didn’t tell me it was Pokémon, it might be hard to tell from just looking at it. Color me impressed.

Here’s the announcement trailer from The Official Pokémon Website:

This Paladog Plush is all I want for Christmas

December 15th, 2012 by

paladog_plush_01

While there are tons of things that would be more practical, this Paladog Plush from Gmarket seller 돌앤돌스, is all I really want for Christmas. While I can’t tell you if this is officially licensed or not, I can tell you that it looks identical to the ones seen in this picture from the “China Joy” games show back in August.

I'll take all four of them! The dolls, of course.

Dragon Flight stickers are a thing in Korea

December 12th, 2012 by

Dragon Flight and the “for Kakao” phenomenon in South Korea was briefly addressed during our last podcast.

What I didn’t expect, though, was to find some Dragon Flight stickers at my local stationery store. I suppose it’s not a shock, especially seeing as I’ve come across Paladog stickers in the past, but Dragon Flight is as disposable a game as they come.

Oppa, Minecraft Style

October 8th, 2012 by

Youtube user: Chickenkeeper24has uploaded this fantastic little piece of entertainment. He mined (get it?!) the best  of PSY’s Gangnam Style and cobbled them together into a Minecraft original video. Oh hell; I’m done with this recurring joke so just shut up and watch the video.

Oppa, Gangnam 8-bit Style

October 6th, 2012 by

Youtube user: DaneBoe  has produced this great little piece of media. He mined the best bits (get it?) of PSY’s Gangnam Style and plugged them into a wayback machine to create a NES-era stylized look and sound of the original music video. This is an aging video-game nerd’s dream of simpler times with a modern music twist, yet far more addicting than Activision/Blizzard’s ProfitCraft that surely would exist if Bobby Kotick had his way, but never will (I hope).

The thought of all those pixels air-humping were sadly left out of this video and a major oversight by Mr.Boe.
