Cursewatch ’13: Megatron breaks Jerry Rice’s record

December 23rd, 2012 by

Calvin Johnson, the Madden NFL 13 cover star, must not understand what it means to be cursed. The Detroit Lions wideout just broke the record for most receiving yards in a single season during the fourth quarter of a nationally-televised game against the Atlanta Falcons. He also may have made the Madden Curse his bitch in the process.

Down 28-16 in the fourth quarter, the Lions were sure to get the man they call Megatron involved. Lions QB Matthew Stafford decided to make things interesting by throwing into Johnson’s vicinity and tossing an awful interception. Way to go, person most responsible for the Lions’ awful record. The Falcons definitely didn’t know you were going to throw to him with just four yards between Megatron and the single-season receiving record.

Check out the nice graphic before the record was broken.

The next drive, down 31-16, Stafford again went to Calvin Johnson on a short pass on 1st and 10. Johnson picked up the record on a 26 yard reception, giving Johnson a gaudy 204 yards for the game.

Madden NFL ’13 Cover Vote now in Finals

April 18th, 2012 by

It’s all come down to this. Calvin Johnson versus Cam Newton in a battle for the cover of Madden NFL 13. Who will be cursed?

You can vote for the cover over on ESPN SportsNation.

Tune in next week to find out which player is going to have an awful year. My guess is this is the year the curse is broken, causing the earth to crumble as demons rise to pull John Madden down into the fiery pits of Hell whence he was born. No, forged… not born.

This Week in iOS (8/28/2011 – 9/3/2001)

Welcome to another installment of “This Week in iOS,” your weekly installment of all the things I’m too lazy to write about.

This week, there’s a hidden drinking game. See if you can find it…

FYI: Madden NFL 12 now in App Store, maybe you should wait

August 30th, 2011 by

About an hour ago, Madden NFL 12 showed up in the App Store for $6.99. Suck on that, people who waited in line for your fancy-schmancy console versions with your outdated “control pads” and time-killing “Game Modes.”

For those of you who just can’t wait, go ahead and pick it up. However, be forewarned.

ESPN starts Madden NFL 12 hype machine

August 9th, 2011 by

So, my prediction was wrong, and Peyton Hillis is now contractually obligated to get his legs broken this year. The NFL lockout is a distant memory and the new NFL-NFLPA collective bargaining agreement is in place for the next ten years of coincidental injuries or production drop-offs related to being on a game’s cover.

ESPN is your place to go for early reveals at some team and player ratings. Two teams are being released every day with a majority of the AFC already posted. Thanks to the lockout and the abbreviated free agency period, you’re going to need a roster update on day one.

EA Sports loses coin flip, Packers win Super Bowl XLV

February 7th, 2011 by

Back in 2004, Electronic Arts began simulating the Super Bowl using Madden NFL games. They’ve done a bang-up job, no less, predicting six of the past seven Super Bowl winners.

This year Madden NFL 11 picked the Steelers over the Packers. This year, Madden NFL 11 was wrong.

Obligatory Madden NFL 11 Post: Cleveland Browns Edition

August 7th, 2010 by

That's fear in his eyes.

It’s that time of year again. The last days of summer means many things: back-to-school clothes shopping, desperate attempts to hook up with a vacationing summer girl, and another glorified roster update to a mostly uncontested NFL gaming license in Madden NFL 11.

I haven’t actually bought a Madden game since Madden ’96. You’ll have to excuse me. I’m bitter. I am a Cleveland Browns fan. Madden doesn’t have a lot to offer me this side of Turducken. That said, I’m buying it this year. It’s my way of saying, “Thank you for last year’s ‘Madden Curse‘ on Troy Polamalu.”
