Xbox 360 finally admits it’s a damn PC, gets a browser

June 5th, 2012 by

Oh, E3, just as I was ready to forget about you completely, you delivered me the greatest news of all. While every outlet seemed to focus on Microsoft’s SmartGlass technology, the snippet directly below it was more interesting to me.

Internet Explorer for Xbox. Explore the Web on your TV in an amazing way with Kinect and Internet Explorer for Xbox. Use your voice to explore your favorite sites with ease on the biggest screen in the house. Even use your phone or tablet to type and control your experience. Internet Explorer for Xbox will launch later this year in all markets that have Xbox LIVE.

You may recall Xbox product director Aaron Greenberg’s declaration two years ago that the Xbox 360 would never have an Internet browser.

kinect-pr-top-1

Microsoft has put forth an official Software-Development-Kit (SDK)for would-be PC/Kinect hackers and software makers. This is no doubt a move to encourage game development for Windows, which makes sense since the next version of Windows, Windows 8, is said to come with XBOX Live included (watch for the anti-trust lawsuit ala the Internet Explorer litigation).

What kind of games or software do you think people will make with an officially supported SDK for Kinect? Security-ware? Perv-ware? Or just games?
