The Relentless Memes And References Of Guacamelee

April 18th, 2013 by
guacamelee trainingClick for a larger image and a healthy dose of referential madness

Guacamelee isn’t just a game about exploration and dimension-shifting luchador madness; it’s also a continual bombardment of posters and billboards meant to passively test your knowledge of internet and gaming culture. While I don’t claim to recognize every little nugget of reference in Guacamelee, many of them I do, and there is a sense of achievement, however slight and fleeting, each time I connect the dots.

If you haven’t already given Guacamelee a shake, you ought to. It’s muy caliente, hombre.

Dark Souls II Trailer Promises Many Deaths

April 11th, 2013 by

You know, the Dark Souls games (Demon’s Souls included) have this weird veneer to them. To the uninitiated, the games can appear a little humdrum or even generic. This trailer doesn’t try very hard to get you pumped; it looks like some pretty standard medieval fare.

But the mere promise of a new Dark Souls game – for those of us who’ve endulged and struggled with the first two – is all it takes to get you ridiculously excited, not to mention discretely terrified. In any other game, a flock of flying dragons probably wouldn’t be much cause for alarm. In Dark Souls, it’s the harbinger of cardiac arrest.

I Thought I’d Hate Jetpack Joyride On The PlayStation 3, But I Was Wrong

January 29th, 2013 by

jetpack joyride ps3

When I first spotted Halfbrick’s Jetpack Joyride on the PSN Store, I couldn’t help but grimace a bit. “Hmmm,” I thought, “Free-to-play on my PlayStation 3. The invasion has begun.” So I ignored it. I ignored the shit out of it. After all, I already had the game on my iPod Touch and I was reasonably certain the PS3 port would be inferior. Also, I’d already played the game from here to hell and back again. I figured that, for me, there was no more fun to be rung from this rag.

Review: Borderlands 2 (PS3)

October 23rd, 2012 by

Borderlands 2 is a sterling example of how a sequel can build on its predecessor with only minor tweaks and come out feeling better than the original. Everything you loved about Borderlands is back – the mechanics have been finessed for the better, and the story is more engaging than ever before. The battle to liberate Pandora from the tyrannical grip of Handsome Jack is an awesome one.

June 16th, 2012 by

Available soon in Europe and coming stateside in October to Gamestop is this golden PS3 controller, glittering in all its faux-metallic majesty. It will retail for $55.00 and will stand out, for better or worse, in the most goldenest way possible amongst your other non-gilded gaming accessories.

Warren Spector on Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two

May 16th, 2012 by

Just a quick update, as I may be the only person looking forward to the Mickey Mouse and Ephraim the Retarded Rabbit Oswald the Lucky Rabbit team-up. I enjoyed Epic Mickey on Wii, but there was no denying the shoddy camera ruined an otherwise great experience.

This video provides a look at the game in motion with Warren Spector.

It’s great to see Bosko and Honey Oswald and Ortensia together again.

I may spend a little too much time on Cartoon Brew.

Sony Goes Melee With PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale For PS3, Coming This Holiday

April 27th, 2012 by

Sony brings their first party best in the upcoming Smash Bros. style multiplayer beat ‘em up (c’mon, say it with me) PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. You and your friends can duke it out with characters like PaRappa the Rapper, Kratos, Sweet Tooth, and even Fat Princess in arenas from popular Sony games like LittleBigPlanet and God of War.

Expect more roster reveals as we get closer to the holiday season.
