At first glance, the Move may resemble a weird sort of high-tech, roll-on antiperspirant. But once those balls light up they become wands of light and prismatic justice. We got our hands on the PlayStation Move and here’s what we think of it.

It’s pretty nifty. As promised and expected, it’s quite a bit more accurate than the Wii. It takes a bit of preparation to set up, especially in our house where the only way to get 8 feet between ourselves and the camera is to completely move the couch.

You can play at 5 feet away but the gameplay suffers a bit for it. In the case of EyePet, you need to move the camera so that it’s lower to the ground. I guess what I’m trying to say is that, depending on the game, you might have to make some adjustments for optimal effect every time you want to play, and that can be irksome if you’re a lazy bastard like me.

One of the first things we noticed is that the infamous “ball” top of the controller, the part that lights up, is not made out of a hard plastic like expected but rather a soft rubber that conforms if you squeeze on it. Since our 2 year old son has not yet learned the nuances of careful treatment, this is probably a good thing.

Once you’ve got the Move controller in your hand, you can really begin to appreciate the colored ball. I admit to thinking it was pretty silly before, but it grows on you fast. It’s bright, it’s bombastic, and it’s beautiful.

Sports Champions is cool and really quite fun, although the game selection is limited and has some glaring omissions (no bowling!!?!?!!!11!). Archery is a blast if you have two Move controllers, so is fighting as a Gladiator since you can use the other controller as your shield. The range of motion is pretty amazing, even those jaded with the Wii will be surprised. You can rotate any object you’re holding, which is great for table tennis and, my personal favorite, frisbee golf! The disc physics are spot on, it’s just like throwing one in actual life.

EyePet is sickeningly cute and our son loves it, even if he can’t quite grasp how to play it just yet. The camera seems to have trouble identifying your fingers when the game prompts you to “tickle” the little guy, but we’ve found you can simply use the Move controller instead for instant and perfect feedback.

There’s not much available for the PlayStation Move right now with the exception of a few launch titles. I’m really looking forward to playing through Heavy Rain again when the Move patch hits, same goes for Resident Evil 5. I also intend to try out R.U.S.E. when my backlog frees up a bit more. I see a fairly bright future for the Move if it continues to get the kind of support it needs to flourish. Here’s to hoping that happens.
