Episode 004: Adventures in iOS

June 16th, 2012 by

In this podcast, Mark A. Brooks, Markham Asylum, and Fade to Slack cover the iOS bases and just talk about games. Endless runners, cave flyers, and the newly-coined “runner jumper.” Thanks, Zombie Parkour Runner, for giving us that one.

What happens when a new iOS-device owner gets sucked into the world of Paladog!? What’s Paladog!?! No, that’s not a coin block. I’m upset that you don’t know about the best game to come out of South Korea that just happens to have its own exclamation point.

Finally, the big news out of E3 was SmartGlass, not Nintendo’s Wii-U. Listen as we quickly glaze over it because, really, if that’s the biggest news out of E3, then you may as well close up shop.

Be honest. You have 64 minutes to spare. It’s cool. You can multitask. We don’t mind.

Zynga looking to acquire Draw Something developer

March 20th, 2012 by

Zynga is rumored to be acquiring OMGPOP, developer of Draw Something. This comes as a shock to no one. It’s not uncommon for a larger company to buy out its smaller competition to prevent that competition from threatening their business. Microsoft did it, and as we all know, “Simpsons already did it.”

Put Your Life On Hiatus And Come Play Tiny Tower

March 3rd, 2012 by

Tiny Tower starts out innocently enough; it’s a simple affair that literally takes only a minute or two to learn. At first it may feel hard to grasp what makes this game so special, but once you’ve built a few floors you can kiss your life goodbye – there won’t be a minute when you aren’t thinking about your damnable tower.

Is this racist? (Dream Heights edition)

February 17th, 2012 by

I’ll be honest, I have no way of verifying this other than to download the game, but this is supposedly a collection from Zynga’s Dream Heights. Just a quick look at this tells me that the story of Latino Love in their eyes is salsa dancing, accidental pregnancy with contested paternity, and a shotgun wedding afterwards. Maybe I’m jumping to conclusions. Maybe I’m the racist. I doubt it, though.

Zynga seems to be going out of their way to make the internet hate them as of late.

Zynga releases Dream Heights update, nerds go negative

February 15th, 2012 by

So… yeah… Dream Heights. Zynga. Copycat. Bitch, whine, moan… yadda yadda yadda, the game saw release regardless. You surely know the story (and possibly my ill-sighted, unsupported petition) of how Zynga saw Apple’s iOS Game of the Year and said, “We can re-build it.” If not, well, here you go.

Being Wednesday, that means it’s time for App Store updates. Zynga released an update for Dream Heights. It did not go well.

Boycott Zynga: Stop Copying Smaller Companies’ Games

January 25th, 2012 by

Zynga, apparently having run rampant for far too long, has decided to copy Tiny Tower, Apple’s iPhone Game of the Year, with their latest iOS outing. Titled “Dream Heights,” the game is about as blatant a rip-off as you can get. Aside from the lack of pixel art, there’s not much to differentiate the two games.

Nimblebit has created this image, which has since went viral on reddit and other sites, as well as Zynga’s own Twitter feed.

Effective immediately, I’m blocking all Zynga games on Facebook. I ask you to do the same as well. Only if you can affect their bottom line will Zynga take notice.

Lame as it is to do such, here’s all I can think to do: Join my petition.

Review: Tiny Tower (iOS)

January 8th, 2012 by

I’m so tired of the free-to-play model. At its best, it’s virtual bartering for how much you should pay for the privilege of playing a game that preys upon humanity’s impulsive, impatient nature. At its worst, it’s not actually free-to-play and has the gall to ask for more money after you’ve already purchased it.

However, after making my own list of the top iOS games from 2011, curiosity got the best of me. I took a look at other writers’ lists. There, one game kept popping up: Tiny Tower. Apple even named it their iPhone Game of the Year. So, I decided to go once more into the freemium breach to see what I missed.
